High-Fidelity Wind Turbine Mast
The design of the mast plays a crucial role in ensuring the longevity of a wind turbine. This example shows the significance of incorporating mast flexibility into the analysis of design loads.
The Model
Model of two wind turbines: one is modeled using rigid body components from the Modelica MultiBody library and the other with flexible components from the Rotating Machinery library.

This model uses a 10-meter steel mast with an outer diameter of 17 cm and inner diameter of 15 cm.
Simulation Results
Study the deflections and reaction forces at the tip of the mast.

Longitudinal force due to headwinds (up to 2 kN) and lateral wind force due to gusts (up to 0.4 kN) are applied.

The resulting moments, between the mast and the foundation, differ by 15%.
