Applied Expertise in
Computational Research
Build a computational research project using Wolfram Language and earn your Level 2 certification. This certification requires proficiency in Wolfram Language as well as research, analysis and communication skills. Browse the project galleries from the Wolfram Summer School or the Wolfram Summer Research Program for inspiration. Summer program attendance and Wolfram Language Level 1 proficiency certification are not required in order to apply for the computational research Level 2 certification, but they are recommended. Submissions are assessed according to a grading rubric.
Level 2 Project
See project examples from the Wolfram Summer School or the Wolfram Summer Research Program in addition to the ones listed here. These examples are representative of the computational essays published following the summer research program that would be suitable for Level 2 certification; keep in mind that an accompanying research paper often includes additional code, details and references. Refer to the grading rubric for specific requirements related to research, analysis and communicating your work.
-
Generating Animated Guitar Tutorials »
Take in chords or MIDI files as input and create an animated tutorial video.
-
Automatic Metrical Scansion of Latin Poetry in Dactylic Hexameter »
Create a neural network that successfully determines and formats the metrical pattern of lines of Latin poetry in dactylic hexameter.
-
Generate Super Mario Bros. Levels »
Use a convolutional neural network to help determine whether an array is a Mario level and proceed to generate it.
-
Colorful Fraud: Exposing Vulnerabilities in Neural Networks »
Implement a framework for generating adversarial examples: input data crafted to cause a neural network to produce unexpected or targeted incorrect behavior.
Recommended Level 2 Certification Process
- Confirm your Wolfram Language skills by taking and passing the Level 1 certification exam for Wolfram Language proficiency.
- Brush up on areas of functionality with the help of Wolfram U courses such as Stephen Wolfram's An Elementary Introduction to the Wolfram Language or search for specific course and video lesson topics in the Wolfram U catalog.
- Computationally explore subjects of interest to you using your Wolfram Language skills and define the problem you want to study.
- Consider applying to attend the Wolfram Summer School or the Wolfram Summer Research Program. If you attend a project-based Wolfram program, you may use your project for this certification.
- Conduct research on your chosen subject to better understand the topic and relevant background information.
- Develop your solution to the problem and write your computational essay.
- Consult the grading rubric to ensure your project meets certification standards.
-
Pay the $395 certification fee and submit your project notebook. (Education customers pay $195; students pay $95.)
This certification fee is included with the Wolfram High School Summer Research Program tuition.
Submitting Your Project
Once your project notebook is complete, pay the certification fee and follow the instructions to upload your file(s). All projects are scored according to the grading rubric. A project score of 75 or greater will earn Level 2 certification in Computational Research. You will be notified about your certification status within three weeks of your submission. Successful applicants will receive a certificate suitable for printing and sharing, and every applicant will receive project feedback that includes an explanation of their score. Applicants who receive scores under 75 may work to improve their projects and can apply again for Level 2 certification by submitting revised projects with the certification fee.
